Barclays support flood victims
Barclays Bank Mozambique SA handed the Red Cross of Mozambique (CVM) a cheque at the amount of USD 100.000 on 14 January, to support the flood victims in the country.
This donation will help CVM provide emergency shelter, food, blankets, medical assistance and medicines to the flood victims.
According to the Managing Director of Barclays, Paul Nice, “apart from the business interests of the company in the country, we are also committed to humanitarian actions helping the most disadvantaged communities in the areas where we operate.”
Paul Nice expressed satisfaction for the fact that the institution he runs in collaboration with his team was able to provide this support to the flood victims, estimated in 250.000 people in six districts in the central and southern provinces of Mozambique.
The Chairperson of Barclays, Casimiro Francisco, said that this donation is one among many others aimed to mitigate the difficulties of the populations directly affected by the floods. He further stated that the problem of floods will never be solved unless new dams are built.
The Secretary General of Red Cross of Mozambique (CVM), Fernanda Teixeira, expressed her gratitude and stated that “this contribution will in fact alleviate the communities,” and further recognised that the situation is serious.
She also considered Barclays donation as opportunity and wished that the solution for “today’s” problems will also work for future situations, thus reducing the impact of the recurrent disasters in Mozambique.
