Barclays donates food and medicine

Barclays donates food and medicines to the needed children, as a follow up of its social responsibility project.

Within its Social Responsibility program with emphasis on Education, Health and Job Creation, Barclays has once more made a contribution to the Education and Health sectors that are considered the most sensitive sectors of the Mozambican society.

Food and medicine are being donated on a monthly basis to two charity institutions, namely AACOSIDA (Association of Friends of AIDS victims’ Orphans) and CRPS (Mahotas Psycho-Social Rehabilitation Centre). Besides, school furniture has been donated to Noroeste 2 Primary School (Escola Primária do 2° Grau do Noroeste 2).

AACOSIDA (Association of Friends of AIDS victims’ Orphans)

AACOSIDA with Head Office in Maputo, specifically at Bagamoyo, is a charity institution created in 2002 with the aim of helping HIV infected children and HIV victims’ orphans. The representative of the institution, Mr. Dumssane Macamo contacted us and presented a humanitarian aid project and thus, we deemed important to visit the institution to know it and the concerned children.

BBM’s Marketing Department visited the association and saw that there are about 800 vulnerable children. Afterwards, Barclays management decided to assist them by providing, during a year and on a monthly basis, 1 kit of staple items according to the list of items sent by the Chairman of the Association that includes rice, sugar, beans, soap, oil and peanuts.

Now there are 800 children living from the aid from several people and institutions such as Barclays that is proud to, through the help provided, put a smile on the delightful faces of the children.

The assistance is made on a monthly basis and has a one-year duration having started on December 2004, period chosen on purpose to coincide with Christmas and proportionate a joyful Family Day for the children.

CRPS - Mahotas Psychosocial Rehabilitation Centre

CRPS Mahotas Psychosocial Rehabilitation Centre was opened in 1998 and is located in Mahotas and belongs to Província Portuguesa da Congregação de Irmãs Hospitaleiras do Sagrado Coração de Jesus.
A Congregation that was instituted upon invitation from the Mozambican Government to collaborate in the assistance of mentally-ill patients in the Psychiatric Hospital of Infulene to which, from 1990 to 1997, these nuns used to provide assistance.

One year later, Mahotas Psychosocial Rehabilitation Centre was opened to assist adults, providing nursing care in a regime of Day Centre. After the 2002 floods, other shortcomings to which the congregation felt that needed to give attention to rose: multi-deficient children, HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malnutrition.

Thus, Mahotas Psychosocial Rehabilitation Centre started a new mission in the field of infant rehabilitation, a mission that needs support. In this context, BBM decided to provide assistance to those children that endure pain and suffering, by providing them with a kit of medicine, mainly of vitamins, based on a list submitted by Centre. The donation is made on a monthly basis and as with AACOSIDA it has a one-year duration, having started in September 2004.

This Centre is represented by Irmãs Hospitaleiras do Sagrado Coração de Jesus, namely by Sisters Isabel and Alcina.

They take care of children with psycho-mental diseases, HIV infected children and orphans among which 65 are in-patients and 40 aren’t but have weekly consultations and come from several extremely vulnerable families to whom they provide food on a weekly basis.

This donation covers children from the following areas: Mahotas, Magoanine and CMC, all of which are assisted in the Mahotas Psycho-Social Rehabilitation Centre.

Noroeste 2 Primary School

Noroeste 2 Primary School is a school that needs considerable financial and material aid both for pupils and teachers.

Information about the needs of the School came to the knowledge of Barclays from a report broadcasted on STV and in which some members thereof were interviewed and affirmed that they worked in precarious conditions.

Barclays contacted the School Management having talked with the School Principal, Mr. Gonçalves António Cossa and subsequently donated material aid, providing them with classroom and office furniture. This gesture aims at attenuating, within our possibilities, the several difficulties that some institutions face to develop their activities.

The material was donated during a ceremony attended by the School Principal and some teachers. Given that it occurred in a time when pupils were on leave, they could not take part on it.
